Permits
You have been concerned
about the requirement to
obtain a permit when moving
remains from plot to plot
within the cemetery.
The
Office of Vital Records has
finally agreed that in the
near future this will no
longer be necessary.
In
about a month, the Office of
Vital Records will update the
Birth and Death Registration
Handbook and the section on
Dispositions will be changed
to state that permits are not
necessary to move remains from
plot to plot (or the wording currently
there now may be taken out.)
Until the handbook is updated
you will need to obtain the
permit.

Summary - July 2004

U.
S. Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) has
introduced H.R. 4112, a
bill “to establish consumer
protections including
disclosure requirements,
relating to funeral service
contracts and for other
purposes.” The bill was
referred to the House Energy
and Commerce Committee.
The
bill is similar to the bill
that Foley introduced in the
closing days of Congress in
November 2002. At that
time, Senator Christopher Dodd
(D-CT) introduced a companion
bill in the Senate, but no
similar bill has yet been
announced for the U. S.
Senate.
